“Wellness” seems to be the buzzword of our society right now as well it should be. But what does it mean to be well? I believe it’s when we are feeling good not just physically but mentally and emotionally as well. To have all three of those in alignment allows us to feel more connected to ourselves and our vitality, allows us to experience less stress and more joy, think more clearly and act in alignment with what we really want in our life.
So in this often overwhelming world of wellness, where do essential oils fit in? And why are they important?
Essential oils have a major seat at the wellness table due to both the role they have played in the history of wellness (there’s a reason why both Frankincense and Myrrh are referenced in the bible as holy gifts) and the role they play in the future of holistic health and integrative medicine.
For me personally they have been a major component in my own journey of mind-body healing especially in the realm of stress and anxiety. On a physical level, they have played an integral role of reconnecting me to my body and understanding its needs while on an emotional level they have worked hand in hand with other holistic techniques to begin to heal deeper pains and allow more for peace to enter into my life.
But what are essential oils? In a nutshell they are natural aromatic compounds extracted and distilled from plants for health benefits.
And why are they effective? Again, in a nutshell it’s because oils contain hundreds of different compounds, providing a complex and versatile ability to combat threats without building up a resistance.
Oils then use their distinct ability to pass through our cell membranes to work with the body to address issues and root causes on a cellular level. Essentially (pun intended), all of the qualities that allow for plants to heal and protect themselves from disease and other environmental threats are then distilled and passed on to humans for our use and same benefits.
However, whether used aromatically, topically or internally, the quality of the oil is one of the most important aspects and should not be taken lightly. My personal brand of choice is Doterra due to the rigorous standards their distillation process goes through to ensure that the oils are free from fillers, pesticides and other contaminants. The danger in using oils with unregulated standards can result in compromised quality and limited health benefits (which unfortunately often comes with many grocery store bought brands).
Although we are a society that’s riddled with stress and disease along with the fact that we are a “band-aid” culture, when given the time, attention, support and tools it needs, our body is completely capable of healing itself naturally and do what it’s engineered to do.
The life changing benefits of Doterra essential oils are virtually endless and can be applied to nearly every aspect of our lives and as we like to say in the oil world, “There’s an oil for that.”
